On the eve of the 7th Annual San Francisco Bay Area International Salsa Congress, we are thrilled to have DJ Frank joining us. Though centered in the Los Angeles salsa community, Frank is a well known figure in the SF Bay Area salsa scene, as well. It is a testament to his broad popularity that he has been invited to be among the line-up of Congress spin maters, that also include: DJ Fab Fred, DJ BoriQua, DJ El dela Clave, DJ Super Chino and DJ Edmundo; along with DJ Lobo from L.A. and DJ Nick from Boston.
MG: Hello DJ Frank, welcome to Beyond Dreamz Entertainment. Can you share a little about your background, including how you got started as a DJ?
DJ Frank: Well I'm originally from Los Angeles born and raised here, Mexican decent and I started DJing while I was in High School. We used to do Disco parties in backyards and charge a couple of bucks . . . so by Monday we had a few dollars in our pockets. I used to be the doorman at a club here and one day the owner said he wanted to start a salsa night. I bought a few Cd's and we were off to a "shaky" start. In 1995 I met Albert Torres, he asked me to DJ at The Sportsman's Lodge and well, here I am!!
MG: Tell us about your involvement in the Los Angeles salsa community?
DJ Frank: I've been involved for the last 13 years, played at mostly every club there is here.
MG: How does the L.A. salsa scene differ from the Bay Area salsa scene?
DJ Frank: LOL! I found out that the "scene" is the "scene" no matter where you go.
MG: Giju is quickly gaining notoriety for his unique ability to meld traditional Latin salsa, with his native Hindi music and vocals.
What do you think about cross-cultural innovation in salsa?
DJ Frank: Its Great! Salsa is one of the few genres that people have cross-produced and Giju has done a GREAT job (I wanna be in the next video bro) lol!
MG: I understand that you are one of the featured DJs for the 7th Annual SF Bay Area International Salsa Congress, where Giju will be featured. When did you first become involved with PB&G Productions and the SF Congress?
DJ Frank: I first became involved when I met Ricardo and Michelle. Wow! Its been a while. I've been at the SF Bay Area Congress since the 1st event seven years ago, and have also done a few clubs in the area.
MG: Do you collaborate with SF Bay Area DJs and if so, with whom and what kinds of projects do you team-up on?
DJ Frank: Collaborate? Not really, but they are all good friends of mine; Fred, Felipe, Chino, Tony O, Orlando and my dearest friend La Coqui. They are all Great!
MG: Who are some of your favorite traditional salsa artists? Contemporary salsa artists?
DJ Frank: In any category that would have to be El Gran Combo, Sonora Poncena, Tito Puente, Joe Cuba, Celia. I could never finish this list!
MG: Are there any particular DJs that have influenced your own development?
DJ Frank: You know I may be the only DJ that would admit it but yes, Super DJ Robby had a lot to do with me becoming a salsa DJ here in L.A.
MG: What other types of music are you influenced by (specific artists)?
DJ Frank: Lol! OK, here it comes . . . In my car I don't listen to salsa, so I have Vicente Fernandez, Pepe Aguilar, Trio's (I love trios) Banda El Recodo . . . heck I even have Michael Buble in there too!
MG: Can you share your impressions about today's Bay Area Salsa scene?
DJ Frank: Well it has grown since I first came up here. The level of dancing is amazing. My respect goes to people like Ricardo and Michelle, John and Liz, Ricardo Tellez, Ava Apple and many more for making the Bay Area scene what it is today.
MG: How do you see the west coast salsa scene evolving?
DJ Frank: Well I think the West Coast doesn't get the respect that it should. Things have been developed here; new styles for example. It's not all about New York (I'm gonna get crap for this!)
MG: How do you view your role in bringing, securing fresh sounds that inspire and encourage further growth salsa?
DJ Frank: Well I try to spin New salsa along with Classic salsa and I am always on the lookout for different stuff.
MG: What do you want the SF Bay Area salsa community to know about you?
DJ Frank: That I will always be grateful for what the Bay Area did for me when I was ill.
MG: I asked DJ Frank to put together a hot "Dreamz set" of his favorite Salsa beats for you to enjoy.

MG: In closing, what can you tell you us about yourself and perhaps other Bay Area DJs, that might help us to more deeply appreciate the important role you "each" play in Salsa entertainment?
DJ Frank: Well . . . this page would never end but, we (DJs) are a HUGE part of the scene. Some people think that anyone can be a DJ (and trust me there are a lot of DJs that shouldn't be DJs). I'll get crap for that one, too!
But honestly, I feel we don't get the respect we should. Take for instance flyers for big events, they always have the Dancers, Bands etc. But who the f%$* are the DJs?? I think that the DJs can make or break an event; all we want is a little promotion.
MG: Thank you Frank for taking the time to respond to our interview request. We look forward to meeting up with you at SF Congress AND promoting DJs, as part of our collective endeavor!

CROSS-TRAINING
Supplement Your Dancing
RESISTANCE & STRENGTH
It is important to supplement your Salsa dancing with resistance and strength training.
Resistance training can be extremely beneficial to your ability to salsa dance and is important to include as part of your regular exercise program. Resistance training or strength training can be performed by using free weights such as dumb bells or bar bells, cables, or weight machines.
Some of the benefits of resistance training as they pertain to salsa dancing are improved balance, improved muscular endurance, and increased strength of muscles which decreases the risk of injury. Balance can be improved through core training or doing exercises which strengthen your hips, abs, and back muscles.
Through performing these exercises you will learn how to engage your core while you are on the dance floor so you have more balance and coordination while dancing. Muscular endurance can be improved through completing a higher number of repetitions of exercises during your strength training.
For example, completing 15-24 repetitions of a chest press in one set. This will give you more energy on the dance floor and less muscular fatigue. Last, resistance training decreases the risk of injury giving your muscles more strength and making them less likely to tear or be worn down through dancing.

In conclusion, although our dancing provides us with an amazing cardiovascular work out, we need to remember to keep our muscles in shape through strength training. This should be done a 2-3 days a week per muscle group in order to sufficient make gains in our bodies.

CHANGING GEARS
There are lots of exciting things going on! I’m officially a “BIG” artist now and very much looking forward to work with their remarkable team. =) As per the plan, BIG Music will be releasing my album early 2009.
Just a couple more days before the 2008 SF International Salsa Congress and I’m pretty stoked about the Beyond Dreamz production for Saturday night's show!! I’m introducing to the Bay Area “Children of the Revolution”, a Seattle based Flamenco band who will be an integral part of the Beyond Dreamz Team live performance on Saturday nigt. A fusion of Flamenco, Indian music and Cha-Cha-Cha!!! This is the format that I want to expand on, for future productions by Beyond Dreamz; acts that offer a unique experience of world music and dance styles.
Interestingly, the idea of including flamenco in our production came into being during an informal jam session with Vassili, the band’s lead singer and also a salsa enthusiast. That was last year. We followed up on it later this year and decided collaborate for SF Congress. It couldn’t have happened at a better event.
I was visiting Seattle last Sunday to practice with Vassili, along with his other band members Eric and Encarna. Eric is the lead guitarist and Encarna is the Flamenco dancer plus guitartis/singer. What amazing talent!!
I composed a short song with their backing in an hour!! We’ll be performing that song live this Friday as part of our production. =) Their intro act is going to leave the audience wanting for more, for sure.
Dreamz team is all set to perform. They are all looking so phenomenal with the new outfits. Kristen and I spent quite some time trying to decide on the outfits. Luckily, Tatiana found a really good store with tons of options. We did a gig last Friday and the choreo was very well received by the audience. Looking forward for bringing it on stage at the congress.
We are also formally introducing the company logo this month. We went through way too many drafts from different graphic artists before picking the winning design. We selected this as it cleanly expresses the concept on which company was found.
We’ll have a lot of pictures to share with you in the next edition. Until then, adios y pais.
